The census is the most important statistical survey in Japan. It is conducted once every five years and covers all people living in Japan (including non-Japanese people) and their households.
The purpose of the census is to understand the actual conditions of people and households in Japan and to obtain basic data for various administrative measures and other programs such as improving the living environment and disaster prevention planning.
Census documents will be delivered starting late September. A Census taker with an official ID card will visit your household to deliver the documents. Please answer the door when they come. Everyone living in Japan is legally obligated to respond to the census.
Responses online or on paper are accepted. It takes about 5-10 minutes to respond online.
