On August 20, a pension seminar for foreign residents was held at the TOPIA. Three staff members from the Tokushima North Office of the Japan Pension Service came as lecturers, and nine foreign residents from Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Nepal, and China participated.
Participants were divided into three groups—Chinese, English, and Vietnamese. Interpretation support was provided by TOPIA’s consultation staff and interpretation apps. The lecturers explained in detail the structure of the National Pension system, the importance of enrollment, the disadvantages of not paying premiums, as well as special payment exemptions for students and exemption or deferment systems available to those facing financial difficulties.
It was also emphasized that foreign residents are required to enroll in the pension system, that non-payment may affect their status of residence, and that the procedure for applying for the “Lump-sum Withdrawal Payment” upon returning to their home country was also explained.
After the lecture, individual consultations were provided. Participants shared feedback such as “It was the first time I was able to understand how the pension system works, and I’m glad.”, “I had been worried about my unpaid periods, but this seminar gave me a clue on how to resolve it.”, “It was helpful to learn about dependent family members under Employees’ Pension Insurance as well.”
This seminar became a valuable opportunity for foreign residents to deepen their understanding of Japan’s social security system.
